Exploring concepts of amity between individuals, communities, and the two countries united by the festival -- Canada and Israel -- in celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday.  
Two performances will showcase over 160 dancers from the Lower Mainland and Miami.

The Vancouver Public Library, working on a Canada 150+ project “Story City,” will be
recording short personal stories about neighborhoods in Vancouver, and thoughts about life in Vancouver as a particular group (ethnic, gender, etc.). Everyone is invited to share.

Exhibit of Jewish History

The Ties That Bind charts the 150 year history of Jewish people in BC. Since the earliest arrivals during the Gold Rush of the 1850s, our community has had a storied past. Learn about the founding of the first synagogue, the first Jewish mayor of Vancouver, the entrepreneurial origins of local businesses, and the establishment of community institutions through this exhibit. We will be celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday with Debby Fenson and “Sulam” a local band inspired by music from the Middle East and Africa, as well as flamenco, klezmer, Yiddish, gypsy and jewgrass (Jewish bluegrass). We also welcome Rabbi Jennifer Gorman of MERCATZ Canada: the Conservative movement’s Zionist organization.

This exhilarating performance, choreographed by Rebecca Margolick and co-created and directed with Maxx Berkowitz, seamlessly fuses dance, live music and interactive media. This full-length work, created during a Fellowship in New York City with LABA: A Laboratory for Jewish Culture and two Chutzpah! Festival Creation Residencies, is brought to life on stage with dancers Margolick and Chuck Wilt, guitarist/media/composer Berkowitz, guitarist/composer Jake Klar, percussionist Bruno Esrubilsky and special guest Israeli author Ruby Namdar.
